“Pegasa Pils” or “Pegasus Palace” – THIS IS A JUGENDSTYLE ARCHITECTURAL ENSEMBLE, A RESORT COMPLEX IN JURMALA

The most bright feature of the architecture of the Riga coastland in the 19th century and the first half of the 20th century is the significant predominance of wooden buildings. Wood, as an easily accessible building material, is aesthetically pleasing and suitable for seasonal buildings.

Only wealthy people could attract architects with academic education, mainly Baltic Germans and Latvians, but one can also meet the work of Russian, Finnish and other architects. The city is decorated with works by A. Medlinger, W. Boxlaff, G. Shel, E. Laube. A characteristic feature of Jurmala architecture is the facades and roofs of buildings, decorated with wooden carvings. Here the components of classicism, art nouveau known as Jugendstil in German, Stile Liberty in Italian, Modernisme català in Catalan. In English it is also known as the Modern Style, national romanticism, historicism and functionalism coexist.

There are 414 buildings in the list of architectural monuments, and more than 4,000 built buildings from the city’s development correspond to them.
